After spending the first part of his career directing operas (as the youngest opera director in France), he was then appointed manager of the ballet of the Opéra de Paris, and then general manager of the Opéra de Paris.

He directed the Théâtre des Champs Elysées and then returned as general manager of the Opéra de Paris, inaugurating the new Opéra Bastille and presiding over the two Garnier and Bastille halls.

The President of the Republic appointed him to the Conseil Supérieur de l'Audiovisuel (Audio-visual Council) where he was responsible for public sector radio and television broadcasting and the redeployment of the frequency spectrum.

He then ran the Orchestre de Paris, with its programmes which are presented across France and on every continent.

The President of the Château de Versailles called upon him to organise large artistic events in the grounds of the Château (Bartabas, Alfredo Arias, Group F, the Opéra ballet, concerts, Roberto Alagna recitals and more).

Appointed by the Council of Ministers and by decree of the President of the Republic, Georges-François Hirsch took over at the Directorate of Music, Dance, Theatre and Performance( or DMDTS ) of the Ministry of Culture and Communication. In addition, he was tasked by the Minister with reorganising the Ministry directorates.

He was then appointed Managing Director of Artistic Creation (DGCA), the scope of which includes Arts and crafts, Photography, Design and Fashion, in addition to his previous fields.

Georges-François Hirsch left the Ministry of Culture and Communication to advise regional authorities and foreign governments on their cultural policies. He has organised major cultural events, created a school of music for underprivileged children in Santo Domingo and organised different exhibitions in 2016, specifically: The Hermitage Museum’s “Un siècle d'élégance française” (“A century of French elegance”) at the Grand Palais in Paris for the Biennale des Antiquaires.
